Successful projects are crucial for achieving sustainable  development of energy, water and environment systems so SDEWES centre provides all conference participants opportunity to present their projects through short pitch presentation up to 5 slides and 5 minutes presentations.

H2RES user meeting 

The H2RES user meeting is proposed as a recurring meeting of the growing community  of users and developers of the  Open source H2RES energy system model. Originally developed within the INTERENERGY project, H2RES is a long-term energy planning model designed to represent power-to-X and demand response technologies and to explore energy transition pathways toward fully renewable, 100% renewable-based energy systems, with particular focus to the flexibility options required to balance high shares of variable renewable generation. As the community of users grows, there is an increasing need for a dedicated space where users and developers can meet directly. The event seeks to connect them to share practical experiences across different applications, discuss the model’s planned development, and consider how community contributions can be reviewed and incorporated into the officially released versions of the model. In doing so, the meeting aims to strengthen the community around H2RES and to improve coordination between the independent development efforts emerging across institutions.

H2RES now has a new online home, a single entry point to the model, its team and its documentation at https://h2res.org, with every new release published openly on GitHub. This first “H2RES user meeting,” hosted at the 21st SDEWES Conference in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, opens a new chapter for the model’s community. The hybrid format allows both on-site and remote participants to present their work and take part in the discussion. Looking ahead, the aim is to establish this meeting as a recurring, semiannual H2RES user conference, held online or alongside future SDEWES conferences. Researchers and practitioners working with H2RES, or interested in adopting it, are welcome to join.

Objectives

  • Present the latest developments of H2RES (new model version, graphical user interface, data and input handling, and renewed website) to the user community.
  • Showcase ongoing and completed research projects that apply H2RES, fostering collaboration and the exchange of methods and results among research groups.
  • Hear users' experiences with the model across different case studies and applications.
  • Discuss how user-contributed code can be reviewed and integrated into released versions.

Smart Water–Energy Systems: Digitalisation, sector coupling and resilient infrastructure

An IDIWATER dialogue on forecasting, desalination, resource recovery, flexibility and integrated planning

Water scarcity, climate change, ageing infrastructure and increasing energy costs are placing growing pressure on water systems worldwide. These challenges are particularly significant in islands and water-scarce regions, where limited natural resources and dependence on energy-intensive processes such as desalination require more anticipative, integrated and resilient approaches.

Digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence, advanced forecasting and data-driven optimisation can improve the planning and operation of water infrastructure. They can support water-demand prediction, production scheduling, storage management, predictive maintenance and the coordination of water production with renewable-energy availability and electricity prices.

However, water infrastructure should not be regarded solely as an energy consumer. Desalination plants, wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, reservoirs and distribution systems can also provide flexibility, energy storage, renewable-energy integration and recoverable resources. Their coordinated operation with electricity and heating systems can reveal decarbonisation opportunities that remain hidden when each infrastructure is planned independently.

Developed within the framework of the IDIWATER project, this side event will examine how smart water management, sector coupling and integrated planning can contribute to resilient, low-carbon and resource-efficient infrastructure.

IDIWATER combines applied research, public-private collaboration, digitalisation, desalination, energy efficiency, water reuse, circularity and technology transfer. It also promotes the shared use of public research infrastructure through the DESAL+ LIVING LAB to accelerate the development and deployment of innovative solutions in the water sector.

Rather than serving solely as a project dissemination activity, the event will use IDIWATER experiences as a starting point for a broader international discussion:

How can digitalisation and water–energy integration accelerate the deployment of resilient, low-carbon and resource-efficient infrastructure?

The session will combine six short invited perspectives with a moderated panel discussion and active audience participation. Speakers will present complementary viewpoints ranging from real-time water-demand forecasting and desalination operation to wastewater heat recovery, Power-to-Water, long-duration energy storage and cross-sector planning.

Objectives

 The event will:

  • Present selected IDIWATER results and related international research on smart and integrated water–energy systems.
  • Examine how forecasting, digitalisation, renewable integration and sector coupling can improve the resilience and decarbonisation of water infrastructure.
  • Discuss the main technical, economic and institutional barriers limiting real-world deployment.
  • Identify future research priorities and opportunities for collaboration between academia, utilities, industry and public institutions.
